Melaleuca Product of the Week: Sustain Sport

5/21/2009 07:14:00 PM Edit This 5 Comments »
Man, it was HOT today! So, my product this week is Sustain Sport, the best hydrating sports drink out there. I don't know if Reed could survive the hot days at work without this stuff. Sustain Sport contains 4 electrolytes and keeps him working hard with his shovel for only 30 calories! Far less than Gatorade or Powerade which is just gross. Reed's favorite flavor is the Orange Splash while I prefer a mix of the lemon and berry. I've also used it in place of Pedialyte for Lara when she is sick.

The only kind we've gotten so far has been the berry, and it tastes really good!

My favorite is to mix the berry and lemon. And I'm going to have to put more on Jonathan's order, because we've gone through so much this month. (tal)

Jonathan has his own account now?

Sustain is my drink of choice right now. I can barely stand water alone. I'm quickly running out of my lemon supply. I wouldn't even have thought of using it right now except for Mom who is a genius.

Hey, thanks for the side-bar link to my blog. I appreciate it.

BTW, my favorite electrolyte drink is "Replenish" at Big Lots. They're almost sold out in this area, since it's a close-out.

Anyway, it's $1.00 (was $1.50) for a package of 6 tubs, and each tub makes 2 quarts. So $1.00 for 12 quarts. Cheap!

It's sugar-free, but the down side is that it's sweetened with Acesulfame Potassium, an artificial sweetener.

According to the nutrition label, it has the same electrolytes in the same proportion as regular Gatorade, 110 mg Sodium, and 30 mg Potassium per 8 fl ounces.

I beef that up a bit by adding more Salt, Potassium, and Magnesium.

After I mix it up, I put it in 16 ounce water bottles that I can take to the gym, or carry while jogging.

Then I crush one 99 mg Potassium tablet (aka 595 mg of Potassium Gluconate), plus 1/4 of a 250 mg Magnesium tablet (cut with a pill-cutter), and add that crushed powder to the 16 ounce (or 1/2 liter) bottle of prepared Replenish.

If I plan an intense workout, I add 1/16th teaspoon (half of a 1/8 tsp measure) of sea salt to the 16 ounce solution.

You could concoct your own entirely, without starting with pre-packaged electrolytes. Use your favorite drink mix (sugar-free generic Kool Aid, etc, and add Stevia to sweeten), and add table salt or sea salt, crushed potassium tablets and crushed magnesium tablets to get the balance you want. Table salt and sea salt have about 590 mg of sodium per 1/4 tsp. Store-bought supplements in tablet form are clearly marked, and you can use a pill-cutter and match it to X-quarts to get the balance you want.

See, that math and chemistry and fractions from high school can have some real life applications.

And me being a Diet Coke addict, I cut up Walgreen caffeine tablets (200 mg per tablet) into quarters, and _sometimes_ use 1/4 tablet per 16 ounces, which gives a caffeine concentration slightly less than Diet Coke. Sometimes I use one bottle with added caffeine during some point of a workout.

Shop the sales, etc, and it's still cheaper than Gatorade on sale.
