Everything has it's place

A few months ago I attended an early music education training for a few days. At times I felt very out of place because everyone there was totally against American Idol. I thought to myself "Self, I like American Idol. Am I a bad early music educator?" But I have decided that American Idol has it's place and it's place is to entertain me. So for another season I find myself cringing at the off-key singing, rolling my eyes at the overdone dramatics, sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see who's eliminated, smiling when my favorites make it to the top 12 (including this guy), and anxiously awaiting the next week. Pathetic? Maybe, but at least I am entertained.

I was surprised to find that no one in my program watched American Idol. And then I was equally surprised that the only other person who did was my own advisor. I guess we have a lot more in common than meets the eye, including a fascination with music in pop culture. (Although my fascination has a limit; he actually writes academic things about it.)

I love American Idol and was so glad Danny made it through. His performance made me cry... Yes it maybe pathetic but I enjoy watching it as well.

Very much a Luscious comment. "I said to myself 'self?'."

Hmmm... I didn't think about that. Then Luscious would probably go on a tirade about existentialism and somehow tie it into American Idol.

I said to myself "Self, what is the point of American Idol? What purpose does it have to exist?"

And myself said back to me "Joe, for entertainment. Why else does the television and big shot music industry exist?"

So I said back "Self..."

Complete with hand gestures and facial expressions.
